I love website design and just design in general. But there are a lot of things you need to think about when designing a website…
1. The first question you should ask yourself is if you should lead by example? You can never assume anything when it comes to designing your website. The user might not understand your goal behind it or your business model. Also people tend to have short attention spans and another site is always just a click away. So it is critical to understand the user experience when approaching the design of your website.
2. Another great question to ask yourself when designing your site is do you make the web site search engine friendly? And the answer is yes if of course you want anyone to find it online. You need to make sure that your keywords and site structure is all planned out to account for your keywords and that they are integrated into the design of the website correctly from the start.
3. Don’t get too flashy. I saw this not to get people away from using flash. I actually love flash. But there are correct ways to integrate flash as part of your website and ways not too. You can assume everyone is going to be able to view flash on your site any more. So it is very important to make sure it is built to account for every user type.
4. Next when planning out your website design you need to make sure you build it in a way that the site load quickly. One of the worst things when being on the internet is having to wait for sites to load or having problems loading them. This tends to make users leave quickly or not want to use your website at all.
5. Keep it clean and not overrun with links and graphics that don’t serve a purpose. Because one of the worse things you can do is make it too difficult for the user to find what they are searching or cause issues with your message or overall website goals.
6. Finally don’t forget about content. “CONTENT IS KING” especially when it comes to SEO. When designing your website you should have a good upfront idea about the content you wish to have on the website. It’s purpose and how it will effect the overall design and goals of the website.
The points I’ve listed are all great things to think about when designing your website. But there are a ton more to think about. The bottom line is designing your site is a huge project. It really isn’t easy to design. But someone with great experience and understanding of your goals can make it less painful.
